A0 is 841 × 1189 mm, which is 84.1 × 118.9 cm or 33.1 × 46.8 inches. It's the largest standard A size, with an area of exactly one square metre, and every other A size is made by halving it. Framed, an A0 print comes out at roughly 88 × 123 cm to 94 × 129 cm on the wall.
Below you'll find A0 in every unit, how it compares with the sizes it gets confused with, and what to know before you frame and hang something this big.
In this guide
A0 dimensions in every unit
| Unit | Width × height (portrait) |
|---|---|
| Millimetres | 841 × 1189 mm |
| Centimetres | 84.1 × 118.9 cm |
| Inches | 33.1 × 46.8 in (33.11 × 46.81 to two decimals) |
| Area | 1 m², exactly one square metre |
That one square metre is the starting point for the whole A series. Its sides are in the ratio 1 to the square root of 2, which is why folding it in half gives a smaller sheet of exactly the same shape.
A0 compared with the other A sizes
| Size | Millimetres | How many fit in an A0 |
|---|---|---|
| A0 | 841 × 1189 | - |
| A1 | 594 × 841 | 2 |
| A2 | 420 × 594 | 4 |
| A3 | 297 × 420 | 8 |
| A4 | 210 × 297 | 16 |
| A5 | 148 × 210 | 32 |
Larger sheets such as 2A0 (twice A0) exist, but they're rarely used outside specialist printing.
Sizes that look like A0 but aren't
| Size | Centimetres | Difference from A0 |
|---|---|---|
| 80 x 120 cm | 80 × 120 | 4.1 cm narrower, 1.1 cm taller |
| 36 x 48 inches | 91.4 × 121.9 | 7.3 cm wider, 3 cm taller |
| 30 x 40 inches | 76.2 × 101.6 | 7.9 cm narrower, 17.3 cm shorter |
| 70 x 100 cm | 70 × 100 | 14.1 cm narrower, 18.9 cm shorter |
70 x 100 cm is the largest common poster size in Europe, and it's well short of A0. Our picture frame size chart covers the rest.
A0 in pixels, for printing
| Resolution | A0 in pixels (portrait) |
|---|---|
| 300 ppi | 9933 × 14043 px |
| 150 ppi (typical for large prints) | 4967 × 7022 px |
| 72 ppi (screen only) | 2384 × 3370 px |
Very few images reach 300 ppi at A0, and they don't need to: a print this size is seen from across a room, so 150 ppi or even a little less usually looks sharp. Our pixels to print size calculator will check a specific file.
How big an A0 print looks framed
| Moulding width | Outside size of an A0 frame |
|---|---|
| Slim, 20 mm | About 88.1 × 122.9 cm |
| Medium, 35 mm | About 91.1 × 125.9 cm |
| Wide, 50 mm | About 94.1 × 128.9 cm |
A framed A0 is close to the size of a small door panel. It's the kind of piece that holds a whole wall on its own: above a large sofa, in a double-height hallway, or as the focal point of an open-plan room. A few practical things to plan for:
- Check the route in. Make sure a frame this size will fit through doorways and up the stairs to where it's going.
- Use proper fixings. A large frame needs fixings rated for its weight and suited to your wall. Two fixings, spaced apart, keep it level. Our guide to how to hang a picture explains the options.
- Get a second pair of hands. Hanging an A0 frame is a two-person job.
Which frame for an A0 print?
| The look you want | Frame | Mount border |

| A0 print with a mount | Made to measure frame | Any width you choose |
| A1 print with a deep mount, in an A0 frame | A0 frame | About 12.4 cm at the sides, 17.4 cm top and bottom |
