A5 Size: Dimensions in cm, mm and Inches

A5 is 148 × 210 mm, which is 14.8 × 21 cm or 5.8 × 8.3 inches. It's half the size of A4: fold an A4 sheet in half and you have A5. It's the usual size for notebooks, flyers, cards and small art prints. Framed, an A5 print comes out at roughly 19 × 25 cm to 25 × 31 cm on the wall.

Below you'll find A5 in every unit, how it compares with the photo sizes it gets confused with, and how to frame it so it doesn't look lost on the wall.

A5 dimensions in every unit

Unit Width × height (portrait)
Millimetres 148 × 210 mm
Centimetres 14.8 × 21 cm
Inches 5.8 × 8.3 in (5.83 × 8.27 to two decimals)
Area 0.03125 m², one thirty-second of a square metre

In landscape it's 210 × 148 mm. The shape stays the same.

A5 compared with the other A sizes

Size Millimetres Compared with A5
A6 105 × 148 Half of A5 (postcard size)
A5 148 × 210 -
A4 210 × 297 Twice A5
A3 297 × 420 Four times A5
A2 420 × 594 Eight times A5

Sizes that look like A5 but aren't

Size Centimetres Difference from A5
15 x 20 cm 15 × 20 0.2 cm wider, 1 cm shorter
8x6 inches 15.2 × 20.3 0.4 cm wider, 0.7 cm shorter
US half letter (5.5 x 8.5 inches) 14 × 21.6 0.8 cm narrower, 0.6 cm taller
7x5 inches 12.7 × 17.8 2.1 cm narrower, 3.2 cm shorter

An 8x6 inch photo is very close to A5 but a slightly different shape, so it leaves a small gap in an A5 frame. A 7x5 photo is noticeably smaller. Our picture frame size chart covers the other photo sizes.

A5 in pixels, for printing

Resolution A5 in pixels (portrait)
300 ppi (high quality) 1748 × 2480 px
150 ppi 874 × 1240 px
72 ppi (screen only) 420 × 595 px

A5 prints are looked at up close, so aim for 300 ppi. Most phone photos are comfortably big enough. Our pixels to print size calculator will check a specific file.

How big an A5 print looks framed

Moulding width Outside size of an A5 frame
Slim, 20 mm About 18.8 × 25 cm
Medium, 35 mm About 21.8 × 28 cm
Wide, 50 mm About 24.8 × 31 cm

On its own, an A5 frame suits a desk, a bedside table, a bookshelf or a narrow strip of wall. On a larger wall, group several together in a grid or include them in a gallery wall, where small frames help fill the gaps between bigger pieces. A mount makes a big difference at this size.
